Your fittest body game plan

Your fittest body game plan

If you’re looking for a serious way to get fit, your priorities should be improving how your body moves, getting strong, and developing a high level of conditioning, says Kyle Fields, an instructor with The Fort NYC. Here’s the game plan to getting yourself there.

Build a healthy body

“To improve the way your body moves or reduce pain in your day to day, you need to focus on the function of your joints, their range of motion, and the quality of your movements,” Kyle says. This means following regular mobility routines that specifically target areas like the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, wrist, and core. Try a mobility workout from The Fort on NEOU.

Build a strong body

If you want to have the potential to jump higher, lift heavier, or do more of the things you love in life with ease, then you need to be strong. To accomplish this you need to develop strength, and there are several ways to do it:

  • Strength endurance (performing multiple repetitions of an exercise)

  • Volume and hypertrophy (performing multiple sets of exercise)

  • Density training (performing more work in less time)

  • Power repeats (performing explosive exercises)

  • Tension and tempo (varying speeds at which you perform an exercise)

To put all of these approaches into action, try a strength class with The Fort on NEOU.

Build a conditioned body

“If you’re able to run for an hour with good form, or breathe at high volumes for long periods of time while staying calm, then you’re very conditioned,” says Kyle. “When you’re training specifically for conditioning, you improve focus, mental toughness, composure, and the physical adaptations to sustain strength movements over time,” he adds. To achieve higher levels of conditioning, challenging your body to a breaking point is a must. One simple example of this is 5 or 10 minutes of burpees for as many repetitions as possible. To push past your limits, try a THAW (Test of Heart and Will) workout with The Fort on NEOU.

The Fort instructors recommend taking on three, 20-minute classes per day (one from each category) for 5 straight days. Get started with The Fort Challenge on NEOU today!
